What should I prepare before outsourcing social content?

By Engracia Sleeswijk · 5 October 2026

Short answer

Prepare a clear description of what you sell and to whom, one realistic goal for the next three months, raw material that shows how you speak (recordings, past posts, talks), your target channels, and how much time you can give to review. Agree up front what is and isn't included.

The essentials

Your offer and audience: who you help, with what, and what they usually struggle with before they hire you.

A three-month goal: for example being recognised for one topic, or keeping a steady presence during a launch. Avoid goals that depend on virality.

Voice material: voice memos, recorded talks, client emails you're proud of (with confidential details removed), or posts that felt like you.

Channels: pick the two or three where your clients actually are, rather than every platform.

Agreements to settle early

Who approves what, and how fast. A predictable approval rhythm prevents last-minute gaps.

What counts as a deliverable. At Social Engine, one core idea adapted for two channels counts as one unique item.

What is excluded. Social Engine excludes on-site filming, paid ad spend, direct message management and website development unless agreed separately.

What you won't publish: topics, client names or opinions that stay private.

Illustrative example

This example is illustrative, not a client case. A strategy consultant prepares a one-page brief: her offer (operating-model reviews for mid-sized firms), her audience (COOs), a goal (be known for one topic by year end), two channels (LinkedIn and a newsletter), and five voice memos. With that, the first monthly plan can be drafted after a single onboarding session.

Limitations

  • Preparation shortens onboarding but does not replace it; expect to refine voice and topics in the first month.
  • If you are still deciding what you sell or to whom, outsourcing content is usually premature.
